The MS Willem Barendsz I was a Dutch whaling factory ship that served the Nederlandsche Maatschappij voor de Walvischvaart (NMW) between 1946 and 1955. The ship was originally built as a tanker in 1931 under the name Pan Gothia by the Götaverken shipyard in Gothenburg, Sweden. After the Second World War, the ship was converted into a whaling factory ship and deployed on expeditions to the Southern Ocean.

History and Service

1931: Delivered as Pan Gothia, a tanker.

1955: Following the delivery of the Willem Barendsz II, the ship was renamed Bloemendaal and remained in service as a tanker.

1960: Sold to Nitto Hogei KK in Tokyo and renamed Nitto Maru.

1964: Sold to Nippon Suisan KK and renamed Nichiei Maru.

1966: Arrived in Aioi, Japan, and scrapped.

The Willem Barendsz I played a crucial role in the Dutch whaling industry after the war. The ship served as a floating factory for the processing of whale oil and meat, and was essential for supplying whalers in the Southern Ocean. After its active service, the ship was converted and sold to various international companies, a testament to its longevity and versatility.
