The whaling boats of the Dutch whaling fleet, such as those of the SS Antarctica, were essential to whaling in the Southern Ocean between 1946 and 1964. These boats, equipped with harpoon guns, were used to catch whales and bring them on board the factory ship for processing.

 

Characteristics of the whaling boats

Type: Steel motorboats, often 15 to 20 metres in length.

Equipment: Fitted with harpoon guns, winches and storage capacity for transferring whales to the factory ship.

Crew: Consisted of a captain, a mate and a few seamen.

Operation: Worked in teams under the command of the mother ship, such as the Willem Barendsz I or Antarctica.

The catch boats played a crucial role in whaling by:

Hunting: Locating and catching whales using harpoon guns.

Transport: Transporting the caught whales to the factory ship for immediate processing.

Support: Assisting in towing dead whales to the mother ship.
