The Grand Manan V was built in 1990 by Bodewes Scheepswerf Volharding in Hoogezand, Netherlands, with components from Niestern Sander BV from Delfzijl.
The ferry is designed for efficiency and stability in the rough waters of the Bay of Fundy. Its hull design ensures the vessel glides smoothly through the water with minimal wake – a characteristic appreciated by both passengers and artists.
Since 1997, the Grand Manan V has been operated by Coastal Transport Limited, a ferry company based in Saint John, New Brunswick.
The company was founded by Murray O. Ryder, former Vice President of Operations at Marine Atlantic Incorporated.
In May 2025, the Grand Manan V underwent dry dock repairs at the Groupe Maritime Verreault shipyard in Les Méchins, Quebec, following a collision and grounding.
According to Transport Canada, the vessel was safe enough to sail to the dry dock. Repairs were completed on 18 June, after which the vessel returned to service.
