The MS Rio de Janeiro was a general cargo and freight vessel built in 1956 by the Swedish shipping company Johnson Line (also known as Rederi AB Nordstjernan). The ship was part of the so-called Rio series, a fleet of seven vessels built between 1956 and 1964 at Lindholmens Varv in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Number of ships in the series:

The ships in the Rio series were designed for liner service between Scandinavia and the east coast of South America. They were equipped with electro-hydraulic deck cranes, which was innovative at the time for loading and unloading general cargo. The ships had six cargo holds with one, two or three 'tween decks and possessed considerable refrigeration capacity .

History and Service

Built: 1956

Delivery: 20 September 1956

Lengthening: In 1969, the ship was lengthened to 173.29 metres

Fire: On 29 April 1970, a fire broke out in the engine room during a voyage from Balboa to Buenaventura. The fire was extinguished, and the ship was later repaired.

Disposal: In 1980, the machinery was removed, and in 1980/81 the ship was scrapped at Astilleros de Demolicio Naval Gandia in Barcelona .
