The MS Johan van Oldenbarnevelt and the MS Marnix van Sint Aldegonde were two iconic passenger ships of the Stoomvaart Maatschappij Nederland (SMN), built in the late 1920s and 1930s. Both ships were renowned for their luxury and modern facilities and were deployed on the route between the Netherlands and the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia).


 

MS Johan van Oldenbarnevelt (1928)

Construction: Built at the Nederlandsche Scheepsbouw Maatschappij in Amsterdam, with construction number 194.

Dimensions: Length 176.79 m, width 22.70 m, draught 11.98 m. 2

Tonnage: 19,129 GRT, 11,404 NRT, 10,879 DWT.

Engine power: 2 × 10-cylinder Sulzer/De Schelde diesel engines, total 14,000 hp.

Speed: 17 knots.

Passenger capacity: 363 in 1st class, 281 in 2nd class, 64 in 3rd class, 60 in 4th class.

Service history:

Entered service in 1930 on the Amsterdam–Batavia route.

Requisitioned by the Allies during the Second World War and converted into a troop transport ship.

Returned to service with the SMN after the war.

Sold to Greece in 1963 and renamed TSMS Lakonia.

On 22 December 1963, destroyed by fire whilst on a cruise; 128 people lost their lives.


 

MS Marnix van Sint Aldegonde (1930)

Construction: Also built by the Nederlandsche Scheepsbouw Maatschappij in Amsterdam, with construction number 195. 

Dimensions: Length 176.79 m, width 22.70 m, draught 11.98 m.

Tonnage: 19,129 GRT, 11,404 NRT, 10,879 DWT.

Engine power: 2 × 10-cylinder Sulzer/De Schelde diesel engines, total 14,000 hp.

Speed: 17 knots.

Passenger capacity: 363 in 1st class, 281 in 2nd class, 64 in 3rd class, 60 in 4th class.

Service history:

Entered service in 1930 on the Amsterdam–Batavia route.

Deployed on the Lisbon–Dutch East Indies route in 1939.

Converted into a troop transport ship for the Allies in 1941.

In November 1942, involved in Operation Torch, the Allied landing in North Africa.

Torpedoed by German aircraft off Cape Bougaroun, Algeria, on 6 November 1943; the ship sank on 7 November 1943.

All 3,235 crew members were rescued.
