The Oostzaanse jol is a traditional type of wooden flat-bottomed boat that originates from Oostzaan, a village in the Zaanstreek region. These jols were originally used for transporting milk, hay, manure, and other agricultural products via the many ditches and waterways in the region. They were essential for the local economy, as they were the only way to transport goods by water in an area where roads were often not navigable for larger vehicles.

Characteristics of the Oostzaanse jol

Construction Material: Wood, often oak or other durable wood.

Shape: Flat-bottomed with a slight curve, suitable for shallow waters.

Length: Varying, but often between 10 and 12 metres.

Use: Transport of milk, hay, manure, and other agricultural products.

Propulsion: Originally with a quant pole or by rowing; later also with an outboard motor.

Restoration and model building

The Oostzaanse jol has not survived the test of time everywhere, but there have been initiatives to preserve this heritage. For example, eighteen-year-old Tom Koopmans built his own Oostzaanse jol, under the guidance of experienced boat builder Willem Hos. At the age of ten, Tom became fascinated by an old jol he found, and eight years later, his dream of building one himself had come true. These restoration projects contribute to the preservation of traditional craftsmanship and the heritage of Oostzaan .NH Nieuws

Cultural heritage

The Oostzaanse jol is an important part of Oostzaan's cultural heritage. In 2018, an exhibition about the Oostzaanse jols was held in the Public Hall of Zaanstad City Hall. This exhibition, organised by the Oudheidkamer Oostzaan in collaboration with the Zaanstad Municipal Archives, offered a glimpse into the history of these traditional boats and their role in the local community .
