The MS Polydorus from 1952 was originally built as the refrigerated cargo ship Alcinous by Vickers-Armstrongs Ltd in High Walker, England. The ship was launched on 27 November 1951 and delivered in April 1952. It had a gross tonnage of 7,999 tons and was equipped with a 7-cylinder B&W 2SCSA diesel engine that enabled a speed of 16 knots. The ship was intended for transporting refrigerated cargoes, such as meat and fruit, between Europe and South America.

In March 1960, the ship was acquired by the Nederlandsche Stoomvaart Mij "Oceaan" NV in Amsterdam and renamed Polydorus on 9 January 1961. The ship continued to sail under the Dutch flag until it was sold in 1973 to the China Mutual Steam Navigation Co Ltd in Liverpool. Thereafter, the ship changed ownership and name several times: it was renamed Johara in 1976, Polydorus in 1976, Matina in 1977 and finally scrapped on 21 April 1978 in Gadani Beach, Pakistan.

The ship had a length of 462.9 feet (approximately 141 metres), a width of 62.3 feet (approximately 19 metres) and a draught of 31.7 feet (approximately 9.7 metres). It was equipped with a single propeller and had a speed of 16 knots.
